ADI Training syllabus
ADI part 1
Theory and Hazard Perception
‘Most ADI’s lack basic theory knowledge of ‘The Highway Code’ and simple practical teaching skills, even though they train others how to drive’
A surprising statement but unfortunately very true, this industry has a very small core of quality driving instructors, train with Mitchells and you could become one of them.
The current DSA theory test needs a thorough revamp, it in no way prepares you for the depth of knowledge required to become a driving instructor.
With Mitchells, theory training is given throughout all your practical training, and is ongoing for parts 2 and 3. You must remember that passing your part 1 is the start, you can’t then just forget about it!
The largest proportion of study can be undertaken at home, we can supply you with the necessary training materials or you can obtain these for yourself.
Don’t be conned into thinking you need to attend classroom sessions for your theory, the classroom and tutor need to be paid for!
In practice, it will take many years to gain enough theory knowledge to instruct correctly. The current part 1 is a very simple multiple choice entry exam that most teenagers could easily pass!
Throughout your training theory will be paramount. In addition you will need to pass a video game designed apparently to test your hazard perception skills, best practice your gaming skills!
Mitchells have a lot of respect for the DSA and how they are trying to change the industry, but as regards the theory test at the moment, they have it seriously wrong, the dreaming up and implementation of the hazard perception test for Driving Instructor’s was a sad day indeed. Rest assured, Mitchells will take you well beyond the DSA requirements, and we will let you work the video game out for yourselves!
ADI Part 2
Driving Ability training
Your part 2 training will be the best in the UK. Far more comprehensive than with any other trainer locally or nationally.
The foundation for your training is very simple.
You must be 100% sure that when you drive, you know the correct procedure in any situation.
You must be able to adapt to different situations and alter this procedure if necessary.
You must be technically perfect throughout the drive, but again be able to adapt to any changing situation.
Only if you posses a thorough knowledge of the correct procedures are you able to pass your knowledge on to your pupil’s. That is one of the reasons for poor quality instructors, they were never trained how to drive correctly in the first place! They just got lucky on part 2 and took their training no further. You will be trained thoroughly in all the basic aspects to achieve a technically perfect drive. Remember you’ve probably been carrying out these incorrectly for years!

When you master all this we lead onto:
·Advanced driving techniques
·Defensive driving

Leading to:
·Taking a mock test
·Taking your Diamond advanced driving test
·Taking your part 2 driving test
·Taking the Cardington/diamond special test
James is a Diamond Advanced Examiner, and is fully aware of the training standards required to pass the part 2.
Due to the high standards involved, training hours would normally average between 10 – 25 hours. Remember this is an average, everyone is different.
This training sets the basis for your part 3 instruction. In addition to this training, you must carry out approx 4 hours private practice per hours training.
Also during your part 2 training, we commence with part 3 training. For instance delivering clear route directions, watching your pupil, watching how I instruct you. Most of the larger training companies aim to get you through part two in 2 - 5 hours!
ADI Part 3
Instructional Ability Training
Our part 3 syllabus is delivered in a four stage process as follows
1. Preparation and learning styles
2. Instructional techniques and core competencies
3. Delivering driving instruction in the real world
4. Part 3 test preparation
1. Preparation and learning styles
Every person learns in different ways, including the trainee driving instructor!
Mitchells recognises this and tailors your training regime to suit your individual needs.
We then need to make you understand how your clients learn, in this way you can tailor their training package.
There are many ‘barriers’ to learning, and our training will help to break down these barriers. This first module prepares you for the basic instructional techniques. It helps you understand learning styles and why people make mistakes, only then can you overcome barriers and fix faults. A quality trainer understands the physiology of learning, a poor one does not.
Our trainers are City and Guilds qualified in the delivering of Adult training programs, either 7307 or 7407.
·Learning styles and barriers
·Blooms taxonomy of learning
·Instructor’s legal/moral obligations
·Vehicle safety and maintenance
·Eyesight checks/Driver licensing
·Terms and conditions
·Route directions/Clear communication
·Route planning
·Recapping lessons
·Use of instructor’s mirrors / observations
·Using dual controls/types of dual control
·Professional introductions
·Lesson structure/Timing
·Eye contact/developing pupil interest
2. Instructional techniques and core competencies
Once you understand how people learn and why they can potentially make mistakes, and are correctly seated to observe your pupil, knowing they are safe and legal to drive the vehicle, knowing how to safely stop them if they do not, and understanding how to structure a lesson and direct the pupil on a safe route matching their ability, you can start to learn the instructional techniques! When you have learned how to instruct, you can learn how to rectify faults.
·Pupils previous experience/recapping
·Lesson plans
·Keeping control of lesson
·Briefings
·Talk through instruction
·Control of lesson
·Q and A methods
·Positive instruction/retrospective
·Giving appropriate praise
·Level of instruction
·Planning
·Control of lesson
·Communication
·Feedback/Encouragement
·The core competencies, how to identify, analyse and correct driving faults
This section will form the bulk of your training regime and is the most comprehensive of its kind in the UK. Delivered by trainers who obtained perfect results for themselves and can help you to obtain and develop these same skills.
3. Delivering driving instruction in the real world (Including future CPD)
This section covers the real world of driver training and all that comes with it. Including the business side. Running through Pre Set Tests will not prepare you for this, our training regime will. Please remember training learners is the tip of the iceberg with us.

4. The Pre Set Tests
We finally got here, after many hours of intensive preparation. Mitchells will train you to pass the test. You will develop a thorough understanding of the test requirements; it will become easy at this stage.
How many have failed at this hurdle when they began their training with us? Simple, NONE.
Because they were properly trained to pass a simple test.

Approximate training hours
Again, due to the extremely high standard of tuition an average person requires approx 40 – 80 hours of one to one tuition before a first attempt at part 3.
You will be trained so when you pass you do not feel you have been thrown in at the deep end, you can safely teach any driver or learner to the required standard.
All of the training materials supplied are James’s own work, not just copied material from books! In fact, the majority of the training manual whilst being written was used towards James’s degree with Middlesex University.
Throughout all your training you will be offered demonstrations of how it should be done for both part 2 and 3. You will have the opportunity to sit in on real lessons with real pupils.
All sessions can be taped, making revision straightforward. You only need to bring an SD card.
